Parachute fabric: is a combination of polyester, cotton, nylon, and rayon, so they are usually strong, waterproof, and have a much longer lifespan than PE, PVC, or Nylon.
PE (polyethylene): It has great physical properties of plasticity, durability, and water resistance, but is only suitable for single use. This fabric is very difficult to reuse.
PVC (Polyester fabric): is a common blended fabric used in a lot of life. It is more waterproof than PE but stronger, tougher, and lighter, and can even resist chemicals.
EVA (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate): friendly, non-toxic, and easy to reuse. Often used as the lining of shoes, backpacks, and some household items. Their prices may be slightly higher, but they are definitely worth the investment
Usually, cheap raincoats will be made from a single type or at most 2 including PE and PVC. High-priced raincoats will often use multiple outer layers of nylon fabric to prevent water penetration and inner lining with EVA or parachute fabric to increase ventilation.
Water resistance is one thing, waterproof is the most important factor. The processing between manufacturers will be different, resulting in different distances on the fabric surface. We have tested many environmental conditions such as rain, storm, and snow in continuous time. Some people even use a high-powered sprayer to see the durability and water resistance test.
Some brands will have a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) factor, the way it works will be like a thin film on a lotus leaf that makes water when it comes in contact with the fabric surface, it will immediately turn into drops and fall. ie. Thanks to DWR, waterproofing and water resistance will be further increased.
Why this indicator?
In addition to isolating the body from the humid environment outside, high-priced models will do well in keeping the user's body dry on the inside. If there is no breathable structure, the pressure difference between the outside environment and the body will make the raincoat tight, making it more difficult to move.
When climbing or camping, mobility is always number 1. So we are very concerned about this factor. Some of the new high-end models appearing on the market today apply the principle of pressure to create a shirt that can bring moisture and body temperature out and completely block wind and moisture from outside. inside.
Isn't the more airtight a raincoat the better?
Breathability will greatly limit the amount of sweat that makes the body secret and uncomfortable. Usually, the fact that you feel uncomfortable wet from this cause is not at all due to poor waterproof raincoats. It's from the internal environment created by body heat and sweat.
But that doesn't mean they're always good, especially during storms or cold conditions. At this time, raincoats with good ventilation are an extremely bad choice.
The most basic design will consist of 3 layers: the water-resistant outer layer, the insulation layer, and the evaporative layer. The evaporative layer will be in direct contact with the body and lead to the insulation layer and then circulate with movement to dissipate heat. Usually, the location of the heat release will be in the sleeve or 2 underarm areas.
Comfort & mobility
As mentioned above, if your raincoat is made of PVC, you will not be able to avoid the feeling of entanglement and discomfort due to the thickness of the fabric; As for raincoats made of PE, they are too thin, leading to the pressure difference making them hug the body.
Not to mention the aesthetic factor, the two types above will make your trip worse.
There will be many people who are extremely lazy in carrying a raincoat with them. Because most raincoats will often be big, bulky, and sometimes quite heavy to occupy a place in backpacks, suitcases, ...
Often we will give more consideration to an umbrella instead of a raincoat. This is not wrong but if you invest in one, some models will surprise you with the size of them as small as a cola can.
This may be the factor that makes the price and difference between the firms. There will be products that are optimal in terms of waterproof performance and there will be brands that maximize product weight. Depending on your needs, the purpose will help you choose which products are suitable and which are not.
A good raincoat will balance both factors above.
