How to Choose Hiking Sticks
Hiking Sticks Length
When you position the poles with tips on the ground close to your feet, properly sized poles will have your elbows at a 90-degree bend. This is made simple by the widespread availability of trekking poles with changeable lengths. Some, however, come in set lengths or a variety of sizes. Find the poles that are the perfect length for you using these recommendations.
For adjustable-length hiking length:
A hiking staff or pair of trekking poles with a maximum size of at least 51 inches should be used if you are taller than around 6 feet.
Most changeable trekking poles and hiking staffs may be shortened to a length that will work for someone under 6 feet tall.
For fixed-length Hiking Sticks:
Use the following chart and the manufacturer's sizing chart that is particular to the poles you are considering.
Height |
Suggested Pole Length |
< 5 ft. 1 in. |
100cm (39 in.) |
5 ft. 1 in. – 5 ft. 7 in. |
110cm (43 in.) |
5 ft. 8 in. – 5 ft. 11 in. |
120cm (47 in.) |
6 ft.+ |
130cm (51 in.) |
Adjusting Pole Length
It's crucial to understand what height to place your trekking poles at if they may be adjusted in length. Your arms, shoulders, back, and neck may get uncomfortable from improperly positioned trekking poles.
For general hiking, When holding the pole with the tip on the ground next to your foot, adjust the length such that your elbow bends 90 degrees. For most of your trekking, this length will be ideal.
If your poles have three parts, it might be beneficial to set the top adjustments to the center of the range before setting the bottom modification to the length that will allow your arm to be at the right angle. If you need to modify the length while trekking, you may do it just by turning the top adjustment.
For long uphill sections, To gain more leverage and stronger pole plants, you can cut each pole down by around 5–10 cm. Your poles should be shortened as the slope becomes steeper. Your shoulders shouldn't feel as though they are being strained or overworked by your trekking poles or that they are being forced up into the straps of your backpack. Instead, they should help you go upward without putting any pressure or weariness on your shoulders. You should make your poles even shorter if that is the case.
For long downhill sections, From the length you set each pole at for regular trekking, consider extending it by around 5 to 10 cm. Your body will remain more upright as a result, improving your balance.
If you’re on a long traversing section, To increase comfort and stability, you may adjust the length of the poles on the uphill and downhill sides, respectively.
Hiking Sticks Features
Adjustable: A lot of trekking poles may be stretched or shortened to increase stability on different surfaces. Usually, they may be adjusted from 24 to 55 inches long. The poles should typically be lengthened for downhill travel and shortened for uphill travel.
Non-adjustable: Some hiking poles cannot be lengthened. Since they have fewer moving parts than adjustable poles, these fixed-length poles are frequently used by ultralight users. They work well for tasks where you are confident that a specific length is required.
Foldable: Trekking poles that fold instead of folding into themselves like changeable poles behave much like tent poles. The most compact poles are usually the ones that are also the lightest and take the shortest time to set up. Both ultrarunners and quick hikers frequently use them.
Shock-absorbing poles internal springs that cushion the impact of downhill walking. When not in use, such as when ascending a hill, the majority of poles allow you to turn off this feature. Any hiker will value shock absorption, but those with unstable hips, knees, or ankles or those who have already experienced joint problems are encouraged to search for it in particular.
Standard poles: These are lighter and less costly as a result of not having a shock-absorbing function. They offer a comparable amount of balance and help to shock-absorbing poles, even if they don't cushion impacts as well when traveling downhill.
Ultralight: With reduced swing weight, ultralight poles have the benefit of being lighter and more maneuverable. This entails reduced weariness after a lengthy hike. It is also simpler to bring ultralight poles. A major factor in determining the pole's overall weight is the substance of the pole shaft. If a pair of poles weighs less than one pound, it is considered ultralight by REI.
Camera mount: The handle of certain trekking poles and hiking staffs has a built-in camera attachment, allowing the user to utilize the pole as a monopod.
